The origin of Galway is uncertain. However, the ancient Irish called foreigners na Gall, hence the suggestion that Galway was the place of foreigners.
Main Attractions
Eyre Square (renamed John F Kennedy Park) : an open green park where on can relax or view the many attractions.
National University of Galway, established as one of the Queens' Colleges in Ireland in 1845 and it officially opened in 1849. The oldest and prettiest part of the college (the Quadrangle") is a replica of the corresponding building at Oxford University.
The best way to see Galway city is on foot. The pedestrianisation of the city centre has contributed to the intimate and friendly atmosphere, as medieval landmarks and modern buildings exist side by side.
There are several walking routes in and around Galway. Join a walking trail and discover the city's intricate history with an expert or stroll out to Salthill with its promenade and beach, a popular spot for families.
Shopping facilities in Galway cater for every age and taste, browse through beautiful craftshops, bookshops and art galleries or choose from the latest high street fashions in the modern shopping complexes.
No matter what your tastes are you are sure to find somewhere in Galway to keep your head buzzing till the small hours - rock, dance, techno,jazz, salsa, to name a few music tastes of Galway nightlife.
The bar / club area is mainly in and around Eyre Square (as is much everything in Galway) and Shop Street/ Quay Street. Admission to most clubs can be from £6- £10, and you must have photo I.D. for admission.
Dress codes are usually smart casual, and doormen can refuse entry if they think you are too young/intoxicated, so that is not a good start to the night.
When you have danced the night away be prepared for either a long walk or a long wait at the taxi rank in Eyre Square or at the top of Eglington Street. There are always plenty of weary dancers around but as always take care getting home.
